Coney Island Paintings

     Coney Island, mythic center of New York,
    today is little more than run down bars,
    rides, ruins and memories. Yet I have
    been drawn back again summer after
    summer to paint the remnant of a once
    fantastic place.   If you look closely
    it is all still there-- in the creaking
    roller coaster, boardwalk, fishing
    pier and blazing, hazy sun.

This roller coaster lay abandoned and vine covered for many years. It was a well known Coney Island site. One day before it was to get official landmark designation, Mayor Guiliani authorized its demolition.

Atlantis Cafe                                       oil on canvas 12" x 16"
This old dive-bar opened on the boardwalk.
   An old timer swore he had seen Jimmie Durante perform here in the 1930s.
The sign "atlantis" has been taken
down since I painted here.

The blazing light of the ocean on hazy days
is a subject unto itself.

Late summer afternoons thunderstorms build over Coney Island. The sun is to the west and often peaks through the thunderheads in the form of "god rays." It happens so often that I was able to photograph and sketch the phenomenon in preparation
for this painting.

Subways at Coney Island create great cavernous spaces.
